5 Ways to Manage Conflict in the Workplace

5 Ways to Manage Conflict in the Workplace5 Ways to Manage Conflict in the WorkplaceMany people head in the opposite direction when they spot conflict in the workplace. But if youre a manager thats a mistake. Conflict can be healthy or unhealthy, but either way, it merits your attention. Healthy conflict focuses on differences of opinion regarding tasks or work-related activities. It can be leveraged and facilitated for gain. Unhealthy conflict is the kind that gets personal. It must be extinguished immediately or it jeopardizes the work environment. 5 Styles of Conflict Management The research work of Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann in the 1970s led to the identification of five styles of conflict and the development of a widely used self-assessment called the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, or TKI. Their work suggested that we all have a preferred way to deal with conflict which serves us well in some situations, but not all. The key to success is to develop a flexibl e toolkit of conflict management approaches and use the one that best fits the situation. The mora you can get comfortable with each way of dealing with conflict, the more effective you will be. Collaborating In the collaborative approach, the manager works with the people involved to develop a win-win solution. The focus in on finding a solution that meets everyones needs. This style is appropriate when The situation is not urgentAn important decision needs to be madeThe conflict involves many people or a number of people across teamsPrevious conflict resolution attempts have failed This style is not appropriate when A decision needs to be made urgentlyThe matter is trivial to all involved Competing With a competitive approach, the person who takes the firmest stand wins. This style is often seen as aggressive and can be the cause of others in the conflict feeling taken advantage of. Nevertheless, this style is appropriate when A decision needs to be made quicklyAn unpopula r decision needs to be madeSomeone is trying to take advantage of a situation This style is not appropriate when People are feeling sensitive about the issueThe situation is not urgentBuy-in is important Compromising With the compromising approach, each person gives up sohonigweinhing that contributes towards the conflict resolution. This style is appropriate when A decision needs to be made sooner rather than laterResolving the conflict is more important than having each individual winPower among the people in the conflict is equal This style is not appropriate when A variety of important needs must be metThe situation is extremely urgentOne person holds more power than another Accommodating The accommodating style is one of the most passive conflict resolution methods. One of the individuals gives in so that the other person can get what they want. As a rule, this style is not very effective, but it is appropriate in certain scenarios Maintaining the relationship is more i mportant than winningThe issue at hand is very important to only one person This style is not appropriate when It will not permanently solve the dicke bretter bohren mssen Avoiding The last approach is to avoid the conflict entirely. People who use this style tend to accept decisions without question, avoid confrontation, and delegate difficult decisions and tasks. Avoiding is another passive approach that is typically not effective, but it has its uses. This style is appropriate when The issue is trivialThe conflict will resolve itself on its own soon This style is not appropriate when The issue is important to you or your teamThe conflict will grow worse without attention The Bottom Line There is no right or wrong style of conflict resolution. Each has its time and place. Learn how to use all five and youll be much more effective. As a manager, learn to suggest different approaches based on these five styles when striving to defuse conflict.

Employee Secrets and How to Uncover Them

Employee Secrets and How to Uncover ThemEmployee Secrets and How to Uncover ThemIf you clicked on the article headline with the hopes of learning the deepest, darkest tawdry details of your coworkers personal lives or tips on how to spy on your manager, youre about to be sadly dissapointed. Here were talking secrets of the far more informational type. HR professionals across all industries have begun to see the value in metrics when it comes to hiring and keeping the best employees. Employee metrics that gauge everything from performance to satisfaction levels are mission critical to identifying flaws with and improving your hiring and management programs. One of the easiest to implement methods for gathering this critical data is through the use of regular employee survey techniques. Here we break down the what, when and how of using HR analytics to discover the secrets to hiring and maintaining the best employee talent.Typical Survey TopicsBefore we talk specifics for gathering, it s important to understand the type of data you should be gathering and maintaining for your employees. A few typical topics of survey methods should includeEmployee Performance Regular manager feedback of their direct reports.supervisorin Performance Feedback from employees on their manager is equally as useful.Employee Satisfaction Are your employees happy and if not, why?Employee Benefits Satisfaction A narrowing down of employee happiness focusing on the important area of benefits in the workplace.Employee Exit Survey A valuable tool for outgoing employees. Was it something your company did or said or is it indicative of a lack of upward mobility or other major red flags towards retention?Recruitment Satisfaction How enjoyable and productive was the hiring process overall? Identifying areas of growth can help attract talent.Company Values Does your company have a strong set of core values? Do integrity, compassion or teamwork mean a great deal? Having company value stateme nts and overall principles is only as good as your employees ability to recognize them. Consider asking about what is considered company values as a resource for keeping your corporate message on track.Events Events can be great ways to bring teams and the entire company together. Before and after company events, consider asking for feedback on everything from location to format to help develop more effective settings in the future.Facilities Last but not least, regular surveys can help identify needs for facility improvement. Common areas left uncleaned or greater needs in the pantry or restrooms may seem like small improvements but can add up big when it comes to employee satisfaction.Survey Best PracticesSo now that weve convinced you of the benefits of surveys, lets talk about a few best practices. For starters, although that initial rush of information, along with ideas on what else can be collected through the survey process, can be intoxicating. For those just jumping into the survey game, its best to roll out data collection slowly focusing on specific target areas and then spreading out surveys over an extended time period. Too many surveys at once can make respondents reluctant to answer and can contribute to poor results. On a similar timing issue, be sure to send out surveys as close as possible to the relevant event. New hires, for example, should ideally receive their surveys after theyve accepted an offer to keep the process fresh in their mind. Below are a few more tips on survey best practices to help get the most out of your QA.Keep it brief The longer the survey the less interaction youre likely to get. Keep surveys to 10 questions or less and be sure to let people know the time up front it will take on average to complete the survey.Be succinct A 10 question limit doesnt pave the way for paragraph-long, multi-idea survey questions that require essay type answers. Additionally, each question should be carefully tailored to address one spe cific action area for best application to your data mining efforts.Be accessible Last but not least, keep questions accessible to users. This is most easily done by limiting queries to multiple choice selections with minimal free text fields. Also, consider allowing users to submit via mobile devices so that employees can answer on the go or in free time between meetings.Communicating and Analyzing ResultsOnce youve collected your data, its time to process the takeaways. If youve crafted your questions correctly (see above) youll have distinct action areas that correspond to each of the survey topics. Compare the answers as a whole and look for surprises or trends. These could be areas where correction or improvement are sorely needed. Gather these results into positive and negative feedback, along with your action items. Once thats completed, youre ready to present.Survey results can be used to pitch for process changes, facilities improvement or better tools to those in senior ma nagement and approval roles within your company. Be sure to clearly indicate in graphs and presentations how you came to your suggested takeaways. Never present problems without a solution in mind as this can make you seem un-proactive and can undermine future surveys.Lastly, dont forget to communicate results to your survey participants in the way of follow ups on actions taken from their feedback. Thank participants for their time and provide a timetable for any roll-outs based on the survey. Once the changes have been implemented, consider sending a follow-up survey after employees have had a chance to integrate with the new systems or software. Overall, surveys are a great way to get a handle on what youre employees are really thinking. Communication is important to a successful business at all seniority levels. Listen to suggestions and encourage engagement through surveys for a happier, healthier and more productive workforce.

The best schools in each state for under $20k

The best schools in each state for under $20kThe best schools in each state for under $20kHeres a fact more than 70% of college graduates carry student loan debt, and the average debt burden stands at $37,172. A surprising new study reveals that the problem affects Millennials just as much as baby boomers. These figures got us thinking about the best schools that wont break the bank, so we compiled a new map of the top universities in every state costing less than $20,000 in annual tuition and fees.We compiled the data from U.S. News World Reports annual Best College Rankings. We captured the top-ranked college in every state costing less than $20k each year in tuition and fees (excluding room and board). We then color-coded each state in a heat map to represent the relative cost of the best higher education - light blue states are cheaper than dark blue states. We added the schools logo for quick reference. This snapshot lets you quickly and easily see where getting a degree at a reputable institution costs the least.Top 10 states with the cheapest flagship universitiesWyoming University of Wyoming $5,218Utah Brigham Young University, Provo $5,460Florida University of Florida $6,380New Mexico University of New Mexico $7,146Montana Montana State University $7,150Idaho University of Idaho $7,488Alaska University of Alaska, Fairbanks $7,520Nevada University of Nevada, Reno $7,599Mississippi University of Mississippi $8,290North Dakota University of North Dakota $8,447There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind. Many public universities dienstgrad different rates for students who already live in that particular state and students who live in another state. For example, the University of Iowa will only charge Iowa residents $9,190, but the school will charge nonresidents $30,834, or more than three times as much. Its worth noting, however, that some universities have reciprocal agreements with other states, where they agree to charge the resident tuit ion rates for nonresidents, like the agreement between Wisconsin and Minnesota. In other words, dont automatically assume you can or cannot pay the tuition rates listed on the map. It always pays to check.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.In fact, most people dont even pay the published tuition rates. Fully two-thirds of college kids receive some sort of financial aid in the form of scholarships or grants. That means that if you can combine a scholarship with a low tuition bill from one of these schools, you will be in the best possible position to escape student loan debt altogether. All that being said, there are several key insights on our map. From a geographical perspective, there are affordable top-ranked programs in every platz of the country. The West tends to have a higher number of inexpensive universities, like the University of New Mexico ($7,146) or Montana State Uni versity ($7,150), but similar price points can be found out East, too. Affordable education is available especially in places like Florida, West Virginia, and Maine. Even in New York, Binghamton University costs just under 10 grand.Whats the main takeaway from our map? The least expensive top-ranked school is the University of Wyoming, where it only costs $5,218 each year in tuition and fees. Looking across the entire country, though, there are 28 states with schools under $11,000 and 46 under $16,000. All this goes to show that getting a degree is always a serious investment, but you dont necessarily have to take on a mountain of debt to graduate.Data Table 1.1This article first appeared on HowMuch.

The Perils of Traditional bewerbungsinterview Questions and Ways to Deal with themThe Perils of Traditional Interview Questions and Ways to Deal with themThe Perils of Traditional Interview Questions and Ways to Deal with themAs jobseekers, we have always been at the giving end. It is always us to be answering some of the terrible traditional HR questions. Yes, some modern hiring managers may ask the interviewee, So, do you have any questions for me? And that sounds as if, it is better if you dont. Sometimes, an interviewee too is either bedrngnis confident or is reluctant to ask anything. In such cases, these hiring managers are just lucky.Okay, before I proceed further, this article that I am writing is elend meant for those who badly need just any job. This is for the ones with long term career building intention. An Interview to RememberToday, Ill share my experience of an interview with a Fortune 500 firm. Since it is the experience that matters, lets not name the organization. I hope youll benefit from my experience in terms of not letting the interviewer be too intimidating. It is the eighth round of interview. I am already employed but the lure of working with a Fortune 500 overpowers anything. The scope of learning from industry leaders can never be compensated even with a permanent, high designation, well-paying job with a smaller company.Job HoppingThe interviewer is an interesting woman. On meeting her, I greet her with big smile and take the seat. She appears very happy and charming, as if ready for the kill. The interview begins and she asks, Tell me why have you been job hopping? This seems to be yur sixth or seventh company. It only reflects how unsettled you are I answer, Well, they say never to miss an opportunity, so I kept the doors open and opportunities kept coming. In fact, they didnt just visit for a while, they stayed as long as I wanted them, till the next opportunity came my way.Being Closed to LearningMy answer causes her discomfort. S he wears her coat of defense and asks her next question, I see you are very closed to learning. How do you intend to grow? Well, I guess the fact that I am able to talk to you and respond to your thoughtful questions is because of my readiness which is not possible if I am closed to learning.Being hintermannschaftYou are headstrong, arent you? What makes you so defensive? the senior vice president asks. In my heart, she is already a waste of the companys branding image. I answer, What happens if tomorrow our competitor (imagining I am already employed) questions our branding eminence? Would you attack them or build a strong internal and external defense to alleviate the impact of such assault? Or, for example, if you have a wound, wont you expect our body to build a defense against the antibodies or would you let it fester? I guess, Its great to have the knowledge of defense, itll be instrumental in companys reputation management.Greatest WeaknessNow, she seems to be pretty irritate d and cannot stand my head long answers. Linda, two more questions for you, Whats your greatest weakness? and What do you know about our company? Weakness? Well, we, as in neither you nor I are free from weaknesses. I go weak in the knees at Eagle Boys chocolate pizza and Hyderabadi Dum Biriyani. She corrects me, No, I mean WEAKNESS Sorry, but I think this is asking too much. Why would you want to know about my weaknesses unless you have some dubious plans? I wonder, why is she putting up with so much of me? So you think not knowing about the company can be your weakness? No. I have done as much homework needed for me to understand where I am headed. Everythings there on the internet along with some videos that talk about the organizations culture and inclusivity. But if you expect me to talk about your everyday operations, I am sure you have induction programmes and new hire meetings likely to inform us about everything.Okay, Linda. Its just because of the management, I I smile an d take a leave. The OfferNext week, I am given the offer letter. My work station just opposite to her sad face. I look her up on LinkedIn, and find that she has spent maximum a year with each company. As a B-School fellow, she directly landed with a senior role and heavy compensation. But Interestingly, soon after a month of my joining, she leaves the company to join the competitor with a package thatll help her upgrade her Audi to the latest one in the market.Story ShortDont let your prospective employer or hiring manager dictate you.If there are plenty of people to hire, the job market today wouldnt be facing crises. So, you are importantNo need to talk about your weaknesses or anything thats very personal to you unless you know what you are doing. To What do you know about our company? question, take this, Yes, thats something I wanted to learn more about apart from whats on the internet and your competitors are talking about. Please tell me. Also if you may define my roles and res ponsibilities and how I can give better.Wear a confidence that doesnt show the number of washes you have put it through. It is certainly not the end of the tunnel. And never, never lose your cool. Be polite, be thoughtful, say what you have to and let it go. You listed your email address as badboybob @ bobsbadboys.com. Really!?! Great job, Bob! Personal branding is important, and every company needs a Bad Boy on staff! YOU WROTE YOUR RESUME IN ALL CAPS. REALLY!?! NICE MULTITASKING! YOU ASSERTED YOUR AUTHORITY BY SHOUTING AT THE HIRING MANAGER WHILE DEMONSTRATING YOUR POOR TYPING SKILLS AT THE SAME TIME. You skipped the Professional Summary. Really!?! Smart move! Make the hiring manager search for the stuff that's relevant. Your time is too important to spend it highlighting your unique value at the top of your resume. You crammed a 15-year career onto one page. Really!?! Brilliant!WhatEmployerWouldn'tWantToReadASolidBlockOfTextIn8-PointTypeWithQuarter-InchMarginsAndNoSpaceBetweenParagraphs?WhiteSpaceIsSoOverrated. You copied your old job descriptions verbatim. Really!?! Good idea! A detailed list of past job duties starting in the '80s or '90s will surely help the hiring manager assess the value you can bring to their company in 2010! OK, just to be clear, those are all mistakes, and the congratulatory comments are jokes. Really.

Discovering Finlands sauna culture

Discovering Finland's sauna culture Discovering Finland's sauna culture I’m in the eastern reaches of Finland, in the Lakeland region that includes scenic Lake Saimaa, which has 14,000 islands and more shoreline than all of France. As the sun sinks slowly into the surrounding forest, I slink on to a “floating sauna,” a mini houseboat specially designed for a sauna experience.I’m discovering Finland’s sauna culture, which I’d heard about years ago from a native, Heiko. He had described to me how saunas were a necessity of life, something the Finnish couldn’t survive without, whether in urban venues, apartment complexes, or as outhouses â€" called mokki â€" by lakeside cottages.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Entire social gatherings revolve around saunas, with families inviting other families to their homes to sauna together, as others might invite friends over for dinner. I am quickly learning that in Finland, what pasta is to the Italians, saunas are to the Finnish.Mikkeli â€" Gateway to the Lakeland RegionEarlier that day in the pretty city of Mikkeli, I’d left my hotel suite, which had its own requisite sauna, and did some touring. Mikkeli, about a 2 ½-hour drive from Helsinki, has quite a bit of WWII history given that the city served as command headquarters for fighting off a possible invasion from Russia, 100 kilometers to the east.Especially interesting are the Headquarters Museum that housed the Finnish high command and a communications center, based in a cave blasted into the side of a mountain.Mikkeli is also the gateway to the Lakeland region, and so at day’s end, I find myself on the beautiful lake, pouring cold water over roasting stones in the floating sauna, then soaking in the heat before diving into the lake to cool off. I repeat the process, breaking momentarily to admire the amber hues of the setting sun from the deck while sipping a refreshing mixture of gin and grapefruit, called lo nkero, or long drink.Regarding this sauna culture I’m experiencing, the captain says, “It’s a lifestyle, it’s like eating.”He proceeds to tell me that he has numerous saunas including one at home, at his workplace, and in his mokki alongside his country cottage. In fact, there are one million saunas in Finland â€" about one for every five persons â€" and it’s in Finland from where the word sauna originates, saunas going back 10,000 years in the country. I’m told there was a time, back in olden days, when some women even gave birth in saunas (the heat tempered), since it was a clean, warm place. The Art of the SaunaI gain a glimpse of mokkis the following day as I navigate a small rowboat along the shores of Lake Saimaa. I pass one quaint mokki after another as birds gracefully sweep between reeds along the water’s edge. Then I pull my rowboat up to a private dock that leads to my rented villa at Anttholanhovi Art Design Villas. This lakeside resort features architectur ally stunning villas set amid a lush Finnish landscape of pine and birch trees. It is from some of the birch trees that a sauna whisk, or vihta, has been made for me, a bundle of supple, green tree twigs bound together, which I will use to gently lash and rub myself in my sauna. This tradition sounded a bit barbaric to me when I first heard of it â€" slapping oneself with branches (or doing the same to a friend) â€" but it’s a requisite part of the sauna culture. So, whisk in hand, I head to my warmed-up sauna. After pouring cold water on the slabs of heated stone, I reach for my whisk. I follow the protocol of gently slapping the soft, new birch growth over my limbs then making my way toward the heart. This is meant to jumpstart one’s circulation and infuse soothing birch oils into the skin. Birch, I’m told, is especially beneficial for relieving joint and muscle pain.Invigorated and warmed up, I swiftly head down the dock for immersion into Lake Saimaa once again. By now, I’ m beginning to feel like a well-heeled sauna-goer, not flinching for a moment before jumping into the chilly lake but relishing this exuberating Finnish tradition. The next day, I enjoy a guided boat ride on the lake, weaving around scenic islands as well as surveying mystical ancient rock paintings carved into bedrock at water’s edge.At a stop for lunch, I meet a lakeside resident, Otto, who lets me peek inside his “smoke sauna,” a special type of sauna-hut without a chimney. There’s a laborious process behind this sauna. Otto first takes out the hut’s wooden benches before firing up 4,000 pounds of stones for 10 hours.Upon extinguishing the fire and opening smoke holes, he replaces the benches and is ready to relish the sustained heat within, which he says offers a superior sauna experience. (Certainly, Otto is a connoisseur of saunas; he was the first person in Finland to be married in one).Of much shorter tenure are “tent saunas” that Otto builds along the shoreline when out hiking with friends. These versions are made very quickly, relying on a fire to suck up moisture from the ground for a good dose of heat. Otto likens these tent saunas to Native American smoke tents.Urban Saunas in HelsinkiFollowing my Lakeland diversions, I head to Helsinki, which is situated along the Baltic Sea. I stroll the pretty harbor area of Market Square, where stalls of local vendors feature crafts and culinary treats. Many historic highlights of the city are in this vicinity such as a large cathedral, its steps serving as a gathering place. As I pass by it, there’s a live art installation on the plaza, featuring a dozen or so poised acrobats dangling alongside one another from high bars. Also, by Market Square, adjacent to an enormous Ferris wheel, is Allas, a sauna facility that has three sea pools that float atop the Baltic, offering a unique urban sauna/spa experience, and special experiences such as sauna yoga.In the distance across the water is Suomenlinna , a naval fortress stretched over six islands. Built in the 1700s, it was intended to counter threats of a Russian invasion by sea, and its church tower today flashes signals in Morse code that spell out Helsinki. I take a short ferry ride to the islands and stroll winding paths, enjoy scenic views of Helsinki, and tour museums on the grounds.Returning to Helsinki, I buy a day pass to visit the other major urban sauna in Helsinki, Löyly. This sauna-spa, an easy bus ride away from the city center, boasts exquisite architectural design. There are three types of saunas within, and between sauna socializing guests bask on Löyly’s tiered sundecks that overlook the Baltic or take dips in the sea.I wrap up my immersion into Finland’s sauna culture, staying for the night in a prison, not because I’d broken any sauna rules, but because Finland is renowned for its original design, and a former prison has been turned into hip, boutique hotel, Hotel Katajanokka. I head into my airy cell for a night’s slumber â€" and dreams of all-things-sauna.Where to StayLakeland Region: Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna  Ã¢€" In the heart of Mikkeli with suites featuring private saunas.  www.sokoshotels.fiAnttolanhovi Art Design Villas  Ã¢€" Architecturally stunning private villas, along with hotel rooms, along Lake Saimaa.  www.anttolanhovi.fiHelsinki: Hotel Katajanokka  Ã¢€" A former prison converted into a contemporary boutique hotel.  www.hotelkatajanokka.fiThis article first appeared on Travel Squire.    You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Could Cultural Diversity Drive Your Business Forward

Could Cultural Diversity Drive Your Business Forward Could Cultural Diversity Drive Your Business Forward Cultural diversity are the buzzwords of the moment, and their impact can be seen in corporate offices across the nation. Cultural diversity is often confused with race. The difference between culture and race in this context is cultural diversity is people of different backgrounds, behaviors and experiences. Racial diversity is based solely on the color of one’s skin. Thus, different races can share the same cultural background, while the same race can have different cultural upbringings. If you watch the news or look at your Twitter feed, hiring people from culturally diverse backgrounds is always in the headlines. Why is everyone talking about cultural diversity, and how does a diverse workforce affect a company? Increases innovation and creativity According to Forbes’ Fostering Innovation Through a Diverse Workforce, a diverse set of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds is crucial to innovation and the development of new ideas.” An example from the Forbes study is Mattel and its line of dolls targeted towards African-American girls. Senior management seeked the help of Mattel’s African-American Employee Resource Group to make sure that the dolls were “culturally sensitive.” Today, the So in Style line of dolls is one of Mattel’s best-selling brands. Expand and retain customer base Besides creating new products, diversity in the workplace can innovate new ways to reach new and existing customers. An example of this in action from the case study is cosmetics company L’Oreal USA. L’Oreal USA tapped into its diverse workforce when it was brainstorming ways to attract and engage new customers. The result of the brainstorm was a partnership with Telemundo and an online community on telemundo.com where members can access telenovela behind-the-scenes content, as well as a beauty blog. The new program helped expand and retain L’Oreal USA’s customer base in the Hispanic market and credits its success to its diverse company talent. Attract top talent A lot of companies, especially in the tech industry, have perks like free laundry and catered lunches to attract the cream of the crop. With diversity becoming something that job seekers are looking for in a company, in addition to other benefits, many companies are creating policies and programs to promote diversity. Another example from Forbes’ Fostering Innovation Through a Diverse Workforce: Intel implemented a program that not only promotes diversity but attracts top talent to its office. The Rotations Engineer Program was “designed to develop and foster new, diverse talent at the tech giant.” Participants in the Rotations Engineer Program spend three six-month rotations in multiple areas and teams within the company. The program is “is a unique opportunity for us not only to attract diverse talent, but to bring diversity of experience to those that participate and experience the program.” Having a culturally diverse workforce sparks new ideas on how to solve business problems and is attractive to job seekers. Promoting a workforce with different backgrounds and experiences can really help your company, especially if it’s stuck in a rut. It’s worth the time to develop a diversity policy when recruiting and hiring for your company.

86% would like their partner to be happy at work, but paid less

86% would like their partner to be happy at work, but paid less 86% would like their partner to be happy at work, but paid less Recent research from Fidelity shows that American couples are willing to sacrifice money for happiness on the job â€" 86% of couples would rather have their partner working in a position where they were happy, but taking home less cash. But on the flip side, 12% would rather their partner be more stressed in a higher-paying job.In terms of the methodology, 1,662 couples ages 22 and up (3,324 people total) were surveyed, who are “in a married or long-term committed relationship. This is the sixth installment of the study, which was first launched in 2007.”How couples manage their moneyPeople do things differently. The research found that while 54% of couples would rather toil away at work more today (“but spend less time to together”) in order to bring in more cash for their Golden Years, 43% would rather spend less time at work now, even if they potentially had less money for that stage of life.Fifty-six percent of couples report that they make everyday financial decisions abo ut living together, and the same percentage says they also manage “retirement and investment planning” this way.But 30% of men and 23% of women report that “they are the primary decision maker” for everyday living costs. How couples feel about debtCouples had a lot to say about this topic. While 33% of Americans “expect their partner to” assist them in paying off any  money they owe, 55% feel the need to help “pay off their significant other’s debt.”Additionally, 36% of millennials, 37% of Generation X and 19% of Baby Boomers are nervous about “paying off debt in general,” but 24% of millennials, 19% of Generation X, and 5% of Baby Boomers feel the same way about getting rid of student debt.Alexandra Taussig, senior vice president of lifetime client engagement at Fidelity, commented on the research in a statement.“We see over and over that dealing with debt is one of the biggest stressors in day-to-day life. Working as a team to put a financial action plan in p lace to address debt can help couples get out from under this burden, and as importantly bring more peace of mind to your household and relationship,” she said. “It’s not the debt you bring into the relationship that matters, but how you work together to handle your debt over the long run.”Couples who are nervous about their debt had a higher change of labeling money as the biggest hurdle they face together at 46%, versus 16% of couples who aren’t worried about this.

How to spot a covert narcissist in your life

How to spot a covert narcissist in your life How to spot a covert narcissist in your life Narcissists can be difficult to spot, especially if they are older and more sophisticated. Over time, they learn how to optimally manipulate their victims, and get by with their schemes without anyone questioning them. What makes it even more confusing is that they don’t all act the same way. Certain patterns of behavior are consistent, such as when they idealize, devalue, then discard their romantic partners. But there are actually three distinct types of narcissists who act very differently on the outside, according to therapist Elinor Greenberg. One of the toughest sub-types to spot is the covert narcissist, because they blend into the background much of the time. They aren’t a cliché of a grandiose, self-obsessed, “look at me” narcissist, Greenberg said. Instead, they are quietly cruel and behave in a much more passive-aggressive way.For example, they may appear calm and professional to most people. But to those, they are in a relationship with they are demeaning, cold, an d abusive, and they can switch between these Jekyll and Hyde characters with ease.People with dark triad personalities thrive off other people’s chaos, so a common game of theirs is to set their romantic partners up for failure all the time, then punish them for doing so. Sometimes they make empty promises, then get a kick out of the reaction when they don’t deliver.“They do what they want to do when they want to do it,” said Shannon Thomas, a licensed clinical social worker who wrote the book “Healing from Hidden Abuse.” “And then they make themselves look like the victim.”Some even deny making promises in the first place, gaslighting their partner into think they are losing their mind. Over time, the victim may completely lose touch with reality, known as perspecticide.Covert narcissists are conflictedIt may stem from covert narcissists wanting to be worshipped. Greenberg said they are conflicted because they think a lot of themselves, but are also incredibly insec ure.“A closet narcissist doesn’t say, ‘I am special,'” she said. “They point to something else - a person, a religion, a book, a dress designer - and they are special, so they feel special by association.”You may wonder why anyone would be in a relationship with a covert narcissist in the first place, and the answer is complicated. According to Perpetua Neo, a therapist and doctor of psychology, one reason is covert narcissists are highly skilled at sucking their victims in with sob stories. This, she said, is a very effective trap for people who are high in empathy.“Think about it like the covert narcissist has wormed their way into your heart,” she said. “There tends to be a string of misfortune, like every single ex is a jerk, every single friend they have is unhealthy. Always ask yourself what kind of circle of friends this person has. If they have zero friends, that’s an alarm bell, because the whole world cannot be that unhealthy.”Spinning tales about t heir abusive childhood, or their battles with addiction, leads highly empathetic people down a path where they start to feel sorry for the covert narcissist. Further down the line you’ll develop a sense of responsibility over them, Neo said, because you feel “tethered to their potential.Ӊ€œBut this covert narcissist has no intention of changing their lives,” she said. “It’s all a way of sucking you in and a way of getting attention, and a way of justifying their s****y behavior towards you.”They manipulate your empathyThe problem is, whether the covert narcissist is a colleague, friend, or partner, if you are their chosen victim, you will already know about their alleged problems. And often they can be hard to ignore. Some even claim they are suicidal, meaning walking away feels essentially impossible for the victim.“This will be a way to condition you into a sense of fear and walking on eggshells around them, so next time you are not going to hold them accountable, ” Neo said. “They may even say this very common statement: ‘I’ve never felt this way about someone before.'”This, again, gives you this responsibility to take care of them, even to the point you allow them to isolate you from your other friends and family. With a covert narcissist, their emotions are paramount, but the victim’s needs and feelings are up for debate, Neo said. Everything is a competition, and nothing that happens to you even comes close to what they’ve been through, they say. They will also never apologize, Neo said. They’ll simply give their victim the silent treatment as punishment until they give up and surrender.Their lies are sophisticatedEssentially, covert narcissists have a high contempt for others, and anything that threatens their superiority is taken as a direct attack, Neo said. That’s why they are so hung up on being superior and looking down on everyone else.“People who are above them in any way, in terms of their assets, or their caree r potential, or their talent, it’ll be ‘privilege,’ or the government’s fault,” Neo said. “Everyone else is just a rich w****r. They had rich parents. There’s always a way of blaming another person. And someone’s fortunes or talents are attributed to something external from them.”They may appear to root for the underdog, but it’s just a way of making them look better, Neo said. By supporting liberal parties, or defining themselves as a feminist, they essentially trick people into thinking they have morals, when really their integrity is in the gutter. They commonly tell other lies about their past, like beautiful or famous people they have slept with, or amazing job opportunities they’ve turned down. It’s all lies, Neo said. She added that covert narcissists tend to watch a lot of television because they are trying to mimic behaviors they see, such as empathy (which they are incapable of.)Escaping the clutches of a covert narcissist is hard because they drain their victims of energy and resources until they find a new target. Thomas calls it an “IV drip of poison” that doesn’t stop until they move on.It’s not until the covert narcissist is gone that the victim finally realizes what they were going through wasn’t normal. But hopefully they do, and then they can start the process of healing, realizing it wasn’t their fault, and putting healthy boundaries in place to never be a covert narcissist’s resource again. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Diagnosing Your Sales Prospects Needs

Diagnosing Your Sales Prospect's Needs Diagnosing Your Sales Prospect's Needs As a salesperson, your role is to help your prospects solve problems and create new opportunities. Your product or service will improve their situation in some way. But before you can show the prospect how that will happen, you must uncover their needs. Finding a prospects needs works a lot like a doctors appointment. The prospect is willing to talk with you because he sees that he has a problem, but he may not know or realize the specific nature of his problem. Like a doctor, your task is to ask detailed questions to identify the specific symptoms, and then use that information to diagnose a cure (hopefully, the product or service youre selling). Make Your Prospect Comfortable The first step in the diagnosis process is to give your prospect a level of comfort. Youll be asking some probing questions later on, and if the prospect isnt comfortable speaking with you, they might not be willing to answer those questions honestly. One way to make your prospect feel safer is to quickly demonstrate your understanding of their situation. If youve done your homework ahead of time by asking some qualifying questions and doing some research, you can give a quick summary of what you understand their situation to be and then ask them to confirm. Ask the Right Questions Once youve broken the ice, you need to get an idea of the prospects general state of mind. Start with some fairly wide questions, like “What is your biggest goal right now? What is stopping you from reaching that goal? What steps have you taken to overcome that obstacle?” These questions will determine your prospects biggest need as they understand it and give you a glimpse into how theyre thinking. Effective Sales Questions Asking the right sales questions will help you more closely understand any prospects needs:Powerful Sales Questions to Ask Your ProspectsSales Questions That Sell Now that youve determined the most significant issues as the prospect understands them, you can probe a bit deeper with some more specific questions. Youll start with some questions about the past, which can help you identify a baseline. For example, if youre selling productivity tools, you can start by asking about how well your prospects employees have performed in the past, how well theyre performing now, what their expectations are as to their performance, as well as how their customers have reacted to their performance level. This line of questioning will give you a solid grasp of how the prospects needs have changed recently (if at all) and where they stand in relation to the goal you uncovered. Determine the Level of Satisfaction If the prospect seems to be doing fairly well compared to their past situation, then your task is to probe for ways that they could be doing even better. Questions like, “Are you happy with your current level of performance? What areas would you like to see improved further?” and so on can help identify areas of opportunity where your product or service can help. On the other hand, if the prospect is clearly going downhill compared to their past performance, you can now drill down further to identify just how bad the problem is. Often the best way to uncover the real problem is to keep asking “Why?” For example, if your prospect says that theyre unhappy with the number of data entry errors they see, ask “Why are your employees making a higher percentage of errors?” They might say that theyre struggling with a new software program. You can then ask, “Why are they having a hard time with the program?” They might explain that it doesnt synchronize well with their existing system. Now you have a much better idea of the exact issues the prospect is facing. Asking diagnostic questions is a powerful tool in sales because not only does it enable you to uncover the prospects needs, it also helps him to understand what those needs truly are. Many prospects have never really analyzed their situation, and what they think of as a primary need may only be a symptom of a deeper need- which your questions can help to uncover.

Horse Farm Manager Career Profile and Outlook

Horse Farm Manager Career Profile and Outlook Horse Farm Manager Career Profile and Outlook Horse farm managers bear the ultimate responsibility for managing all aspects of equine care, supervising farm employees, and overseeing the maintenance of the facility. Duties Horse farm managers are responsible for overseeing various farm employees such as barn managers, broodmare or stallion managers, grooms, and office staff on a daily basis. They may be assisted in these supervisory duties by an assistant farm manager- a position that usually only exists in larger scale operations. Farm managers on small operations tend to have more direct contact with the horses. Managers of large commercial operations often have to spend a significant amount of time dealing with administrative and financial duties and thus have a limited amount of direct interaction with horses. Horse farm managers interact regularly with equine professionals such as riding instructors, racehorse trainers, feed and forage suppliers, farriers, equine veterinarians, and other service providers. They make decisions regarding which suppliers they will do business with and what veterinary hospitals they will choose to consult. They advise the farm owner on what horses to sell or purchase, evaluate the development of foals, monitor the progress of horses in training, and oversee the management of the operation’s finances. Farm managers also usually oversee the maintenance of the entire farm including fencing and barn repair, replacement of equipment, tractor and vehicle servicing, and budgeting for all maintenance costs. Career Options Horse farm managers can work in a variety of environments including breeding farms, show horse farms, riding stables, training centers, and veterinary hospitals. A particularly large market for horse farm managers revolves around the thoroughbred horse industry where many racing, breeding, and training operations require management services. Education and Training Farm managers frequently have a college degree, though this is not always required by potential employers. The equine industry has always placed a significant value on experience, so if a candidate has worked their way up through the ranks (and gained significant experience) they may be able to secure a management position with just a high school diploma. Useful education for a horse farm manager would include pursuing a B.S. degree in a field such as Equine Science, Animal Science, or Equine Business Management. Computer skills are becoming increasingly important for managers in the equine industry, as most record keeping and bookkeeping systems are computer or internet-based. Farm managers usually do a great deal of communication via email with vendors and service professionals. Experience Is Key Most horse farm managers work their way up in the ladder through the time-honored tradition of paying their dues. They may start out in a lower level position such as a groom, earn a promotion to barn foreman or barn manager and then advance to assistant farm manager. If taking this course, they ultimately qualify for full-farm manager responsibilities. It is possible to skip some steps by earning a degree in the field, but a college graduate rarely advances directly to a farm manager position. Horse farm managers must be well-versed in all business conducted at their facility. For example, the farm manager of a Kentucky thoroughbred breeding farm would be expected to have extensive experience evaluating pedigrees, planning breedings, acquiring stallion seasons, evaluating conformation, interacting with major sales companies, and other specialized tasks. Salary The salary for horse farm managers can vary widely based on such factors as the particular area of the industry (i.e., racing, breeding, or showing), the manager’s education and experience in the field, and where the farm is located. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the median wage for farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers is $80,320 (or an hourly rate of $ 38.62). The lowest 10 percent earned less than  $35,360  annually while the highest 10 percent earned  $135,900 annually. Managers of major commercial horse operations can earn salaries well in excess of $100,000 per year. Equine management positions often carry additional benefits and perks such as a free house on the farm, use of a farm vehicle, free boarding for the manager’s own horse, paid vacation, and health insurance. Career Outlook While the BLS predicts that the number of opportunities for all farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers will show a very slight decline (2 percent) through 2024, it does not separate out horse farm managers from its general statistics. The equine industry should continue to have farm manager opportunities available to qualified candidates with the right combination of education and experience.

7 Tips to Develop a Superior, High-Performing Workforce

7 Tips to Develop a Superior, High-Performing Workforce 7 Tips to Develop a Superior, High-Performing Workforce A superior workforce is one that is collectively better than an average workforce. It often includes employees who are smarter, faster, more creative, harder working, insightful, aware of the competition, and autonomous. They are daily contributors to a harmonious workplace that emphasizes accountability, reliability, and contribution.   If your goal is a superior, high-performance workforce that is focused on continuous improvement, you need to manage people within a framework that focuses on performance management and development. To achieve this, there are seven components you need to implement. They work together to create a superior, high-performance workforce. Create a checklist to implement these components and to make sure you are following through regularly. 1. Hiring Create a documented, systematic hiring process. Ensure that you hire the best possible staff for your superior workforce: Define the outcomes desired from the people you hire.Develop job descriptions that clearly outline the performance responsibilities.Develop the largest pool of qualified candidates possible. Search via professional associations, social media networking sites such as LinkedIn, online job boards, personal contacts, employee referrals, university career services offices, search firms, job fairs, newspaper classifieds, and other creative sources when necessary.Devise a careful candidate selection process that includes culture match, testing, behavioral interview questions, customer interviews, and tours of the work area. Perform appropriate background checks that include employment references, employment history, education, criminal records, credit history, drug testing, and more.Make an employment offer that confirms your position as an employer of choice. 2. Defining Goals Provide the direction and management needed to align the interests of your high-performance workforce with your organizations goals and desired outcomes: Provide effective supervisors who give clear direction and expectations, provide frequent feedback, and demonstrate the commitment to staff success.Company direction, goals, values, and vision should be communicated frequently and in memorable ways when possible.Provide a motivating work environment that helps employees want to come to work every day.Provide an empowering, demanding, commitment-oriented work environment with frequent mention of company goals to support your high-performance workforce. 3. Reviewing Progress Hold quarterly performance development planning (PDPs) meetings to establish aligned direction, measurements, and goals: Performance and productivity goals and measurements that support your organizations goals should be developed and written.Personal development goals should be agreed upon with individual employees and written. These can range from attendance at a class to cross-training or a new job assignment. Most importantly, progress on the performance development goals is tracked for accomplishment. Central tracking by Human Resources ensures the development of the entire workforce. 4. Feedback Provide regular feedback to employees that lets them know where they stand: Effective supervisory feedback means that people know how they are doing daily, via a posted measurement system, verbal or written feedback, and meetings.Develop a disciplinary system to help people improve areas in which they are not performing as expected. The system is written, progressive, provides measurements and timelines, and is regularly reviewed with staff members. 5. Employee Recognition Provide a recognition system that rewards and recognizes people for real contributions: Provide equitable pay with a bias toward variable pay using such methods as bonuses and incentives. Whenever possible, pay above market.Develop a bonus system that recognizes accomplishments and contributions.Design ways to say thank you and other employee recognition processes such as company periodic anniversary remembrances, spot awards, team recognition lunches, and more. You are limited only by your imagination.Despite the rising cost of health care insurance, which you may need to share with your employees, provide a continually improving benefits package. 6. Training Provide training, education, and development to build a superior, high-performance workforce: Employee retention and education begins with a positive employee orientation. Employee orientation should give new hires a complete understanding of the flow of the business, the nature of the work, employee benefits, and the fit of his or her job within the organization.Provide ongoing technical, developmental, managerial, safety, lean manufacturing, and/or workplace organization training and development regularly. The type of training depends on the job. Some experts recommend 40 or more hours of training a year per person. Develop a procedure-based, cross-training matrix for each position that includes employee skill testing and periodic, scheduled, on-the-job training and demonstration of capability, for most hands-on jobs.Provide regular management and leadership training and coaching from both internal and external sources. The impact of your frontline people on the development of your high-performance workforce is critical.Create jobs that enable a staff person to do all the components of a whole task, rather than pieces or parts of a process. Develop a learning organization culture through such activities as “lunch and learn,” reading books as a team (book club), attending training together, and by making the concept of continuous learning an organization goal.Make a commitment to both providing and tracking the accomplishment of the developmental activities promised in the PDPs. 7. Employment Termination End the employment relationship if the staff person is not working out: If you have done your job well- effective orientation, training, clear expectations, coaching, feedback, support- and your new staff person is failing to perform, termination of employment should be swift.View every termination as an opportunity for your organization to analyze its hiring, training, integrating, support, and coaching practices and policies. Can you improve any aspect of your process so the next new employee succeeds?Perform exit interviews with valued employees who leave. Debrief the same as you would a termination situation. Use an employment ending checklist to make certain you have wrapped up all loose ends.

What Is So Fascinating About 2018 Resume?

What Is So Fascinating About 2018 Resume? How to Choose 2018 Resume Building a professional resume can look to be an intimidating task when you're applying for employment. Your contact info and other information are available easily beside the proper icon. It's vital that you don't simply apply these resumes verbatim. Old-school resumes begin with an objective. The very first thing you ought to do is make sure a possible employer knows whose resume they're taking a look at!
